Argyranthemum (Argyranthemum spp.)

Argyranthemum Plant Features

A cool-season favorite for springtime gardens, argyranthemum is a delightful annual flower with daisy-like blooms in cheery Easter and springtime colors. In addition to its pretty blooms, argyranthemum has dark green, ferny foliage and grows in a tidy mound, adding lots of garden interest even if it doesn't have any flowers on it. And like most flowers in the daisy family, this one attracts butterflies and other pollinator insects.

Grow sun-loving argyranthemum in garden beds and borders, as well as in container gardens with flowers such pansy, viola, and flowering kale.

Argyranthemum Growing Instructions

Grow argyranthemum in full sun or light shade and moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, such as compost. If you grow argyranthemum in containers, select a high-quality potting mix rather than using soil from your garden. Garden soil is too heavy for containers to drain well and can introduce pests or diseases into the pot. Once established, argyranthemum does a pretty good job of holding up to drought, but hot, dry conditions will make its flowers fade faster. Prevent this by spreading a layer of mulch over the soil around the plant to help retain moisture. This also cuts back on weeds!

Trimming off dead flowers after they fade helps keep argyranthemum looking its best and producing more flowers. Although it thrives in cool weather (and tolerates frosty conditions), it doesn't bloom as well in summer once temperatures spike. If you leave it in the garden, though, it usually bursts back into bloom for fall.
