Esperanza (Tecoma stans)

Esperanza Plant Features

Esperanza is an easy-to-grow tropical shrub that produces clusters of beautiful golden-yellow flowers all year long. Though it's only hardy in Zone 10, this plant has become popular in cold-winter climates as a tropical annual for adding bold seasonal color to decks, patios, and other outdoor spaces -- especially as a container plant.

In the tropics, esperanza can grow 20 feet or more tall and be pruned as a small tree. It's a lovely choice for providing privacy or adding a bit of shade to a deck or patio. In container gardens in the North, esperanza usually stays about 4 feet tall and flowers all summer long.

Esperanza Growing Instructions

Grow esperanza in full sun. It tolerates part shade, but we don't usually recommend too much shade because it reduces blooming.

Water esperanza when the soil dries. Once established in the landscape, it has excellent drought tolerance, making it a perfect choice for gardeners looking for low-maintenance landscapes.

Fertilize esperanza a few times in spring and summer to keep it blooming profusely. Regular fertilization is especially important when the plant is grown in container gardens.

Prune esperanza any time of the year. If you would like to train it to grow as a tree, remove all but one of the stems coming out of the ground. As that stem grows, remove the lower branches to encourage it to form a trunk.

Esperanza is not intended for human or animal consumption.
