Angelonia (Angelonia angustifolia)

Angelonia Plant Features

One of the best container plants for hot, sunny spots, angelonia produces beautiful spikes of mauve, purple, pink, blue, or white flowers all summer long. It's a strong performer in containers as well as landscape beds and borders. These colorful annuals are also available in tall upright and short bushy varieties so you can use them in a wide variety of garden settings. In the North, angelonia is grown as an annual; in frost-free regions, it's treated as a perennial. Most angelonia varieties grow between 12 and 18 inches tall. The plants also attract butterflies and bees.

Angelonia Growing Instructions

Because angelonia is a sun worshipper, plant it in a location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun a day. Although they are more drought resistant than some other annual flowers, they do prefer to be watered when the soil feels dry to the touch. Keep angelonia in top form by feeding the plants every few weeks with a dilute solution of liquid plant fertilizer. Remove dead and dying flower stalks to encourage more blooms. Angelonia has few insect or disease problems, but keep an eye out for aphids during warm, humid weather. These sucking insects look like pepper grains clinging to the new growth of the plants. If aphids attack your angelonia, spray them with a commercial organic soap solution.

Angelonia is not intended for human or animal consumption.
