Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia spp.)

Bird of Paradise Plant Features

Bird of paradise is a stunning tropical plant commonly grown as a houseplant throughout the country and a landscape plant in the frost-free tropics. As houseplants, they add elegance with the bold textural leaves. White bird of paradise, in particular, is perfect for adding vertical presence to a room and is an ideal plant for filling empty corners or breaking up an expanse of empty wall.

Outdoors, even where they're not hardy, bird of paradise are excellent patio plants. The orange variety is loved for its exotic blooms and the white variety adds palm-like texture to decks, patios, balconies, and other outdoor spaces. If you grow bird of paradise outdoors in a cold-winter climate, you can bring it in for the winter.

Bird of Paradise Growing Instructions

Outdoors, grow white bird of paradise in sun or shade; orange bird of paradise needs full sun in order to bloom well. Indoors, they do best in medium or bright conditions. The brighter the spot, the better the orange type will bloom.

Water your bird of paradise regularly. Once established, they hold up well to drought, so you don't need to worry about them dying if you forget to water once or twice.

Fertilize bird of paradise in spring or summer once or twice a year with a general-purpose fertilizer. Be sure to follow the directions on the packaging to ensure you don't fertilize too much; this can be harmful to the plant.

Bird of paradise rarely needs pruning and is not intended for consumption by animals or humans.
