Catchfly Plant Features

Sticky stems that occasionally trap flies, give Silene its common name, catchfly. This pretty little bloomer sends up 12-inch-tall stalks with five-petaled pink or white flowers in the summer. Catchfly prefers cooler climates and well-drained soil and is best treated as an annual or biennial. Catchfly has attractive, mat-like, gray green foliage that disappears later in the season. Catchfly is a sea coast native that thrives in sun or partial shade. Hardy from zones 3-8.

Catchfly Growing Instructions

Catchfly requires quick-draining soil and will suffer if forced to live in wet locations. It grows best in full sun, but in warmer parts of its range, place it in a spot that receives a bit of light shade in the afternoon. Because catchfly has a relatively short life span, replant every year or two with new specimens. Or, allow the seeds from mature flowers to germinate in the soil.
