You might not guess it from looking at it, but columnea is actually a relative of African violet. And like its cousin, columnea is a fantastic houseplant. It has pendulous stems, making it a perfect pick for hanging baskets. When not suspended in the air, the stems will grow horizontally over flat surfaces, so columnea is also a great choice for tabletops and desks.Look for columnea varieties with variegated foliage; these houseplants offer color all year long.

Columnea Growing Instructions
Grow columnea in bright light, but out of direct sun. Too much of the sun's rays can cause this houseplant's leaves to develop sunburn. It grows equally well in natural as artificial light, so columnea is a fab choice for corporate offices. If the plant gets enough light, it produces colorful red or orange flowers.Water columnea when the potting mix starts to dry to the touch. Keeping the plant a little drier in the winter months can help it to bloom better in summer.
If you want to fertilize your columnea, it's best to it in spring and summer. Use any general-purpose houseplant fertilizer and follow the directions on the packaging.
