Ligularia (Ligularia dentata)

Ligularia Plant Features

The huge, tropical-looking leaves of ligularia seem a lot like something you might see in the Amazon, yet this rugged perennial is hardy as far north as Zone 3. This shade-loving perennial is a snap to grow and will reward you with gorgeous clusters of golden-yellow blooms in late summer. Ligularia can grow 3 feet tall and wide so give it space to stretch out in the shade border. It is relatively deer resistant. Hardy from zone 3-8.

Ligularia Growing Instructions

Plant ligularia in a shady spot with rich, slightly moist soil. Like many woodland-type plants, ligularia likes lots of organic matter in the soil, so if your ground has a lot of sand or clay, amend liberally with compost before planting ligularia. Mulch the plants to maintain consistent soil moisture. If allowed to dry out too much the plant's leaves will develop brown, crispy edges.

Ligularia is not recommended for human or animal consumption.

Q&A

My ligularia looks like it's wilting almost every day in summer. I water it a lot. What's up with this plant?
Ligularia's big, tropical leaves can sometimes lose more water than the plant is able to take up, especially during the heat of the day. If your ligularia looks a a little wilty in the afternoon, but perks back up after the sun starts to go down, you have nothing to worry about. If you don't like the wilted look it can have, try moving it to a spot where it's more protected from afternoon sun or wind.
