Pachysandra Plant Features

Inject some much-needed color into shady landscapes with a carpet of pachysandra. This fast-growing perennial groundcover grows 6 to 12 inches tall and has bright, evergreen foliage and small white, sweetly-scented flowers in spring. Pachysandra, occasionally called Japanese spurge, spreads quickly by underground runners and makes a superb replacement for struggling lawns in shady areas. Because of its low care needs, pachysandra is also a favorite plant for woodland gardens and as a living mulch underneath shrubs or trees. Pachysandra is deer resistant. Hardy from zones 5-9.

Pachysandra Growing Instructions

Plant pachysandra in a shady or partially shady location. Although pachysandra will tolerate a variety of soil types, it prefers a slightly moist, well-drained spot. The plants do spread, but is quite easy to control if it grows out of bounds. Once established, pachysandra will look great for many years.

If you'd like pachysandra to spread faster, give it a dose of slow-release fertilizer in the spring. Follow the directions on the product packaging. Adding a topdressing of compost every year can also help pachysandra thrive.
